Aisleworx PFC#03 is entering a new phase. CEO and founder Doug is moving to the US and Rudi will step on the US board of the new US media company. US investors are bringing $1.6m cash, retail expertise and connections. Theoretically a 3x round but let's not count our eggs before the hen squeezes through the hatch marked Exɪᴛ.

Garry deserves a big thank you! He stepped on the board on a temporary basis only to find that last nearly three years. Both Doug and Rudi have totally valued his contribution over that time. Stepping down from the Aisleworx board will give him more time to focus on Hot Lime Labs, especially as he will be spending more time in Europe near kids and grandkids.

You know you have invested early when the startup only comes up with the logo after funding but you also know the founder has the priorities right. Vlatko is one like that and behind FKA's PFC#13.  Still, no website but this article gives some background.

Garry is our investor rep and comes with a positive progress update: the first milestone has been successfully accomplished with slightly better gas emission rates from the prototype than expected. Consequently, we will release the second tranche from our trust account to HLL

FKAngelina Debra is helping with Zino Innovation Hub that is all about supporting great Kiwi companies to grow in Chinese speaking markets. Their May Workshop next Thursday will be great value for founders and funders alike, more details and registration ☞ HERE. Let's help Debra!

On Tuesday Callaghan Innovation, FKA and NZVIF offered their perspectives on startup funding, represented by Max, Rudi and Chris respectively. 30 peeps or so, all was organised by FKAngelina and ecentre CEO Jackie as part of their Startup Toolkit Series.

Awesome closing words from Max: "Go to the ADI.Clinic!". We took bookings during the session and all six slots on Thursday were taken up.

Two rooms, eight mentors: Genevieve, Hattaf (NZVIF), Michelle (LoJo), Paul (Callaghan Innovation) Rudi, Ryan (FKApprentice) Steve, and Tim.

Working with startup founders is infectious. Brain meets Josh and Tim at Ambitai.com at the same time Hattaf Ansari from NZVIF is building his Tɪɴᴅᴇʀ meets business, BrewShout.com. He has been calling into ADI.Clinic regularly for advice and feedback. Don't be shy, check it out. It's all about connecting with investors and mentors. Of course, it's Hattaf from NZVIF!

Will it work? Who knows! Does he rate ADI.Clinic? You bet!

FKA is always happy2help: in this case with the recruitment campaigns of a partner and a startup. Softly mocking NZVIF for not needing to grow their team if all DD reports put to them would be of FKA standard, humorously bemoaning Spoke paying incoming funds straight out on new staff.
Quick update on Spoke: FKA co-investment commitments are standing at $115k now, the total raised at the last EA count was $1.3M.
Callaghan Innovation R&D Growth Grants will be phased out with the introduction of R&D tax incentives by 2019 to help more businesses to undertake a greater amount of R&D.

Have your say and give your feedback on the discussion document outlining the main features of the proposal.  Your views will help the development of policy options for the final design of the R&D tax incentive.

Thanks, Steffen, for bringing this to our attention. Another German?

This mention two issues ago generated 55 downloads for Lance and Punakaiki Fund. Bugger, maybe we should have agreed on some pecuniary payback from Punakaiki?

Formed in May 2014 to do things differently. Taking stock four years on at the end of March 2018, FKAngels and their nominee company have managed NZ$5.5M investments into 14 Kiwi Startups on behalf of 80 investors. Our comprehensive DD reports have helped our portfolio companies to leverage further funding from other investors, including our regular syndication partner NZVIF.

Different because we don't monetise the investment process, no commission or other fees. Aligned with founders our reward comes on exit as it does for them. Different because we take DD and post-investment management seriously. Different because all our angels roll up their sleeves to share the angelic workload.
A big Tʜᴀɴᴋ Yᴏᴜ must go to all our sponsors who help with deeds and dough, especially KPMG who were first on the block and have hosted all our pitches since Aisleworx PFC#03.

We're still working on their partners to see that the numbers from angel investing are bigger and more fun than counting other people's numbers. Chris Chandler from KPMG has seen that light already, as have Nate and Abinesh from Potentia
This week, we have run our first ADI.Clinic together with David and Victor from Zino to focus on Asian Market Entry. Great turnout of mentors, including impromptu volunteer Genevieve. 1 repeat punter reporting progress, 3 Zino-phile punters.

Afterwards, a great mentor dinner till 8pm. Gina joined the dinner after interviewing at ADI for an internship. Will she help Zino, FKA or both? The next Zino+FKA ADI.Clinic will be 3rd Thursday, 18 May.
We sent three FKAngels to Boston for the ACA Summit, Heath, Phil and Tim W. Just in this morning from colourful Heath, what has impressed him: a slide deck and matching video.

CCH has asked all three to find US angels in the film industry to help Moxion PFC#10 take on Hollywood.
Senior Associate Fiona writes the blog and partner Andrew poses for the pic. "Capital raising can be stressful enough without spending hours weeping in front of an excel spreadsheet, desperately trying to reverse engineer your cap table..." Simmonds Steward would love Companyworks to build a SaaS Cap Table solution. Help them pinpoint the pain point!

Editor's note: The blog has since been reattributed to Andrew.
The Innovation Challenge at Auckland University is kicking off. FKA is providing a good measure of judging and mentoring power. It's not too late to help, just email the ringmaster Judith.
Chintaka from GD1 ꜰᴜɴᴅ ɪɪ has brought this namesake to our attention. So we have flying fish and flying angels. What will be next?
Third and final instalment of the man-bra story. Uli loved the Gᴇʟ-Vᴇsᴛ idea so much that he worked with Debra to combine it with the best of Rose & Thorne. Add a little help from Islandic Halldóra, see the result here.

Tue 17 Apr 1830 FKA Pitch Night #039
KPMG, 18 Viaduct Harbour Ave, AKL
We don't waste angels' time with bad pitches like this one
However, we have our normal monthly meeting on Tuesday night at KPMG. A great opportunity to catch up over drinks.
  • StretchSense PFC$01briefing, shareholder confidential
  • Moxion PFC$10 update
  • New angel intro
  • New structure update
The man-bra story continues. Following last weeks brief article on the Gᴇʟ-Vᴇsᴛ, FKAngel Debra decided to go public. exclusively with AFKAF, about her pet project at Rose & Thorne.

This video tells all!

Kami PFC$02 has reached 5 years in business and 5 million users. Awesome!

David Russell was one of their early mentors. He has moved to the US but remains actively involved as FKA Investor Rep for Kami.

Hengjie, Alliv and Jordan have proven to be a founder team with staying power
Moxion PFC$10 has incorporated Moxion Inc to take on Hollywood. Exec Chair Nigel will have more to report at our Pitch Night #039. 39? When will that number be more than the average age of FKAngels?
Lance Wiggs has become a lot more serious since writing witty articles for idealog.
Some like him, some don't. He reckons he can offer a level diversification for angels. See for yourself: the portfolio, managers and fees.

6 April 2018#10

Portfolio Company #02 Kami, NexTransfer PFC#11, Auror aka Eyedentify (pitched April 2015, DD under James H), IMeasureU, Parrot Analytics, PowerbyProxi and many, many other startups have spawned from the annual innovation competition that is student-run, very professionally, at The University of Auckland.

Various FKAngels have participated as judges and/or mentors over the years. IMU won in 2013 with the FKAwsome mentorship of Heath and Rudi. Or take Bob Drummond, he connected with Kami as competition mentor, then became their investor, then chairman and is now their (ᴏᴜʀ) Chief Revenue Officer.

The 2018 season is promising to be very interesting again. Hence, CCH Rudi is encouraging FKAngels to join him and the ranks of other judges and mentors. See for more details ☞ here.

Jason Kerr presented Spoke Phone at our March Pitch Night. We now have the full DD Report available which is being circulated by a separate co-investment call. Thank you to FKAngel Phil Southward for working and DD with Enterprise Angels who are leading the round.

Just email [email protected] if you want more info.

Good news! Debra has passed the FKA Veto Gate. Let's give her a warm welcome! The response on LinkedIn to her joining the FKA clowder has been overwhelmingly positive.
Amanda Gilbertson, Science Manager Agritech responded on LinkedIn:

Lucky FKA. Did she offer you some man bras on 1 April ?
[Amanda was making reference to Debra's involvement with Rose & Thorne.]

Believe it or not, we had a 'matching' founder come into ADI.Clinic yesterday with his ɢᴇʟ-ᴠᴇsᴛ proposition. Essentially, a templated gel application to selectively remove men's chest hair to enhance the appearance for beach, bath and beyond.
Contact [email protected] if this tickles your fancy.

This was clearly a stand out next to the other founders we saw this week at ADI.Clinic: 3x Whangarei, 4x Wanaka, 4x Auckland. Big thank you to the ADI Whips who make it happen: Martin K, Charlie J & Uli W.

Also, Cornelius has received a lot of support from his LinkedIn fraternity support for joining FKA.
Charles Meaden, the founder and CEO of Uproar, FKA Portfolio Company #09 sent in the above in reverence to the CCH.
