Could you have a good argument with a chatbot? We still don't know for sure but we know that Ambit has passed the DD Vote and Heath is starting to assemble a DD Team. Please get in touch with him, if you want to help. Here, now, is the pitch video.
Now, if the above pitch is not enough for you, you can binge on the 12 pitches from the IA Showcase from earlier this month.

Note: Ice Angels have since requeted to remove the link to their Showcase video collection.

Phil and Stephen are our investor reps for Spoke Phone and iDefigo. Investors should look out for a co-investment call coming from each of them in the next few days.

Admittedly, they have nothing at all to do with the Ice Bucket Challenge of the Vernon Winter Carnival, except that the man in the stripy pants also goes by the name Phil Southward. However, some colour was needed!

Greetings from Stephen, our angel in London. He found this table on "How 20 big-name US VC firms invest at Series A & B" and reckons it makes interesting reading. It shows total round size and post-money valuation. All at US scale which is diametrically opposed to Trump's hair volume.

See the full table, here.

Angels are only ever as smart filling in forms as those who tasked with the design of the form. We had a good level of response last week but without the name being compulsory, all respondents shall remain nameless.

All of you, keen to party or celebrate a great FKA-Year, please fill in this tweaked form, here. Only, Debra, who has built and conducted more surveys in her market research career than she as grandchildren, has noticed her erring ways.

All mistakes, grammar, spelling or otherwise in this publication have been made by Rudi and then overlooked by Debbie, Jackie, Karl, Katheren and Masha. Same goes for the images. However, Rudi has been known to insert some after the early morning review.

Could you have a good argument with a chatbot? Just ask the guys from Ambit who pitched last Tuesday. Their video will go to our DD Vote later today and a public version will be shared with the readers of this fine publication next Friday.
Genevieve, like fellow marketer Cornelius, has made it into the gettyimages® hall of fame long before joining FKA. The Board confirms that no objections to her accession have been received and you can forthwith reach her at Genevieve.Tearle@fka.nz. Welcome aboard!
Our FKA gang in Munich! The author whose work was contrasted with 50 Shades of Grey, our FKAngel in Munich, Phil and 'The Frau'. He has pulled out his hair doing more DD than most. Steffen, who has been likened to Ralph Fiennes of The English Patient, and Isabel. Both spent a few months in Auckland and got hooked on a feeling, the angelic feeling whilst hanging out with FKA. They have yet to brave the VETO Gate.

Steffen is currently doing tech DD on Geo AR Games, still with a full shock of hair at the beginning of his angelic career. Phil brought us Spoke Phone and will share his update with wholesale investors shortly. Rumour has it that he's doubling down.

FKAngels work hard and party hard!

① FKA is all about syndicating deals, so why not parties? AIM, the angel group from Blenheim and closer to wine heaven than any other, will have its Xmas Do on Fri 23 Nov and FKA has an official $150 pp permission slip to gatecrash the part. There is more to do over the weekend, CCH reckons a wine tasting tour de force in a stretch limo is called for.

② If there is enough support from angels and founders, let's do a special Xmas Pitch Night on Tue 18 Dec, not for $$$ but for FUN. CEOs of our portfolio companies giving an update and telling us "What we didn't tell you during the year". New angels sharing about "What they didn't tell you before joining". All followed by a meal that ex-FKApprentice Helen and hospo governance hero Paul have already volunteered to organise.

☞ Please RSVP here. The more the merrier, partners & FFF welcome.

No such morbid error happened here. However, when we said last week that James couldn't convince John O'Hara from Ice Angels to syndicate the Ask Nicely seed round that was not entirely congruent with the facts, only the editor's ailing memory.

Whilst there was no joint DD, John did offer FKAngels to participate in the pre-seed notes round, and James was one of the lucky (smart?) angels who took up the offer.

Ice Angels just had their GREAT SHOWCASE and so Flying Kiwi Angels will have their GREATEST SHOWMAN. Yes, our September pitch night is next Tuesday, as usual generously hosted by FKA's premium sponsors KPMG. Incidentally, they are one ahead of FKA with respect to GEO AR Games who are currently undergoing DD whilst Craig Jakich from KPMG Ashburton is already doing the GAG accounts.

Tue, 18 Sep @ 1830, 18 Viaduct Harbour Ave, Auckland

Everyone is amped to hear Ambit pitch so the pressure is on!

Josh and Tim are part of the co-founder team behind chatbot Ambit. Consequently, it takes a conflict-free FKAngel like Heath to be the champion and bring this to pitch night. The crowd wonders what headgear will they wear and who will pitch, given that both Josh and Tim like the sound of their voice. Don't miss this one!

Little known fact, at the IA Showcase the editor caught up with JB from Squirrel who put the Squirrel bot persona on Tinder for a laugh. Haha!

This week Genevieve Tearle is knocking on heaven's door to add FKA wings to her ADI halo. Since April she has been a regular mentor at the ADI Auckland. No wonder that Cornelius, Debra, Rudi and Uli all give a fat tick to see her with wings. Very cool, but as always, SPEAK UP NOW if you know of any reasons why Genevieve should not join FKA! Please, raise your concerns in confidence with the Board. ☞ HERE

www.Moxion.io is our portfolio company #10 and is disrupting film production in Hollywood and beyond. Great editorial coverage in The Hollywood Reporter on pages 12 and 18 for Moxion. This custom edition is distributed at the Toronto International Film Festival

Phil is our true Flying Kiwi often helping with DD whilst travelling for his passion. He recently made 2nd place in the Dutch competition and 5th in the British competition. He competes in the shrinking 'rigid wing' class that is being overtaken in popularity by the 'flexi' class. The facetious might liken his success to 95-year-old Olga who is winning medals and setting world records in her class. ☞ BBC footage

Thanks, Tim (Gelston, not Warren), for reminding us of this harsh reality. We all know that most startups fail but looking at the data of 1,100+ startups from seed investment onward puts it all into an even harsher perspective. Only 48% raised a second round of funding, and a mere 15% went on to raise a fourth. And the chances of reaching unicorn status?

☞ Not great, about 1%.

Ice Angels' Showcase was indeed a numbers game. Table seating for 900, 989 RSVPs, our CCH got seated at table #90, the last one. However, better tables for Trotter who was seen trotting around and Flacks who was also in the room, as was Hall and So.

Big numbers also with the pitches, multimillion rounds at eye-watering valuations. AskNicely, one that got away although we had early engagement. They are now raising US$7-10m on a valuation to be set by the lead investor but expected to be about US$50M. Definitely some great companies in the mix and good on Robbie and team for getting those to the night.

Some early ones too that would unlikely have found a champion among FKAngels, let alone pass the DD Vote. IA's focus and strength are clearly with later stage deals that have rounds which demand the big cheques that such a staged event can generate. The distance between the founders and the investor audience was a perfect proxy for the difference between the IA and FKA style of angel investing.

Torn between Shanghai Nights and Blenheim Vineyards Rudi finally gave in to the former and he will be joining the Zino investor trip to China. As a consequence, he has an Early Bird Ticket to the AANZ Summit in Blenheim to sell away, first come first serve. ☞ more on the summit

Let's welcome George, our second FKApprentice.  He was referred by Nawaz who joined the ranks of FKApprentice only last week. George is gunning to complete his degree at UoA in Finance, Computer Science and Economics by November next year. In the meantime, he is keen to gain real-world experience with the crypto-maniacs at Dasset and ethereal experience with the angels at FKA.

George digs numbers and will keep track of FKA's investment commitments, match payments and guard the nominee records like a lion with his life.

Some interesting questions. ❐ When is the best time to engage with a potential investor? ❐ What if the first feedback was negative? ❐ Does the investor bring in domain expertise? ❐ What are the alternatives to angel investing? ❐ Do I pass control of my business to investors? ❐ What's the advantage of a co-founder agreement? ❐ When is the right time for a shareholder agreement?

All the above were discussed at our #AskAngelsAnything evening this month with co-moderators Rudi and Rory and generously hosted by Averill Dickson and Julie Fowler at the offices of Simmonds Stewart.

Diarize next month's #AskAngelsAnything, hosted by Jackie.

Vivian runs Elite Stay and promptly offered this.

I just wanted to contact you after last night. If you want to promote your "Ask Angels Anything" event and get more attendees next time, I can help to post the event information on my personal social. I have many entrepreneur contacts on Facebook and WeChat. It is nice that you try to build up a supportive startup community, I am happy to help.

This week on LinkedIn; Martin reports a very interesting company from Tuesday's Whangarei ADI - Underbelly. We post with an Aussie v Kiwi spin. Noticing precisely 1,000 followers, we make noises about that too. Then some cheeky bugger decides to take us down a notch and unfollows FKA thus producing a 1k followers post with only 999 followers. The world is in order again, this morning we're back up at 1,001.

Other Kiwi angel groups' following on LinkedIn: Angel Association NZ 35, Angel HQ 0, Arc Angels 55, Canterbury Angels 115, Enterprise Angels 280, Ice Angels 1,150

Ice Angels and all the Icehouse funds are expecting big numbers for this year's Showcase, 13 September 2018. Go there and witness a different style of early-stage investing. All the best to Robbie and his team!
