Another FKA Friday

24 February 2017  aFKAf 2017#04

If you think angel investing is like owning a boat, you're doing it wrong!

  • Thu 4-6pm  ADI.Clinic Auckland, GridAKL
  • Fri 18:30   Opening Party, BizDojo Parnell
This week we held ADI.Clinic in Auckland. A big thank you to the five angelics in attendance: Dan, Josh, Kate Turska, Steve and Tim. Steve is now no longer an ADI-virgin, attendance at ADI.Clinic is fast be becoming a rite of passage among FKAngels. All six slots for next week are already booked.

Let's talk about two: Susan from www.memeandco.com drives her business with a female focus in company and market, referred to FKA from a woman. You'll never guess what Ulrich has squeezed into the jucebox.nz.
Deadline today:  Friday 24 February.  See last week for details.
Come flying with Flying Kiwi Angels! Who else? We cannot fly but we can jump. More details to follow.

There is some editorial bias in the following quote. Richard Campbell wrote "KPMG New Zealand is also supportive of the event and Rudi Bublitz who is one of New Zealand’s chief herders of angel investors has also been generating buzz for the event amongst the investor, start-up and economic develop community here in New Zealand."
The summer break is barely over and Katheren is at it again. This time she is teaming up with Jo Allum another fearless friend from Tauranga to test the risk appetite among FKAngels. We called for more women to increase diversity but any more women like Katheren could be more than we asked for.
"Does anyone know if kiwis can swim? We know they don't fly!"

The cat herding season is now in full swing but they are not easy to tame after the summer break.

Josh is not shy and will step on the podium as MC for this event in March. They have seven competitors from as far away as Christchurch. The winner will fly to compete at the world champs in Frankfurt, Germany. Additionally, the NZ winner has the option of flying to Jakarta a couple of days later to also compete there. This will have no impact on whether or not they compete in Frankfurt.
Josh says: C'mon all ye faithful FKAngles and join me for this event, email
This week we held ADI.Clinic in Wanaka and Auckland. Interestingly Charlie has taken to calling his mentors, clinicians.
Here one example: Matthew Bennett was a professional cricketer, then entered law, was headhunted to come to NZ and had embarked on Nibblish. Healthy snacks, punters love it including the angelic panel of six (
AANZ Exec Directory Suse writes: The most pressing project just now is identifying active lead investor recipients for this year’s AANZ ‘scholarship’ to attend ACA in San Francisco from 24-26 April. More intel about the conference is here including the link to the conference hotel etc.
To access the special discount Kiwis have been given and take advantage of the early bird rates you should register by COP tomorrow. PDFS2  ($995 before USA Feb 17 and $1045 afterwards)
We have also been offered a further $US100 discount, which will be rebated, if we can get to a delegation of 20 New Zealanders. We are already at 12.
These scholarships have been incredibly valuable for those who receive them. There is a noticeable lift in engagement and confidence on their return. You can access reports of previous recipients here on the website.
Up to six scholarships of $2,000 will be offered to successful candidates. This covers the conference registration fee and is a contribution towards travel expenses. (There are AirNZ fares available at the moment for about $2,000 rtn ex-AKL.) AANZ must receive a trip report from the recipient before the scholarship fee is paid out. Candidates will be assessed for their contribution to angel investment in NZ, their participation in deals either as a lead or active investor and for their potential to be more engaged with the wider industry in the future. We will also select candidates to ensure a representative spread across the industry.
We will also provide $1,000 to support up to three AANZ members, regardless of whether you have attended before, but priority will be given to those who have not received support. Reports will also be expected.
Planning is well underway for the Leading Lights dinner with the venue secured at John’s Grill just off Market Street. Please let me know if you intend to join us. It’s always a great night and a terrific opportunity to have some quality conversations. The likes of Dave Berkus, Ian Sobieski and David Verrill have already confirmed their attendance.
A reminder too to let me know if you would like to be part of the “after match weekend” with a couple of dinners and a night in Napa Valley. This is a ‘pay your own way’ affair.
Please send me the names of anyone you think should be considered together with a brief explanation of why you believe they meet the criteria by Friday 24 February. I will convene a 2-3 member selection committee with a view to informing the successful candidates by Friday 3 March.
Rudi says: ACA in San Francisco was great, last time. Definitely worth going, so let me know if your want your name on the FKA shortlist for this handy subsidy.

Sadly not now combined with ADI.Clinic and no life music but still worth checking out this new baby in the Dojo stable.

Following the internal email from chairman Charlie of last month, we can now confirm that Josh Comrie will be appointed to the FKA board. He has already worked closely with the board around the formation of LP2.
Note from the Editor:  Beware of where you leave your selfie collages on the web. Is he competition to current frontrunner Dhaya for 2017 FKA Poster Boy/Girl?
The Desires of Kiwi Investors Revealed
Do Kiwi investors behave just like American investors? Definitely not! Culture influences our geneneral behaviour, investment behaviour is no different. The ecentre has just concluded research with support from FKA, NZVCA, NZAA, Enterprise Angels, EY, NZVIF and many others across NZ. Some startling discoveries!
Sharing just two findings here, and you should come to our REVEAL season next Tuesday to hear all. i) US & NZ investors rate founder drive and passion among the most important, ii) NZ investors put much more emphasis on founder experience than do the US.
Hattaf Ansari, Massey University Masters Student, will reveal all.

This January press release from Datagate proudly announces the appointment of FKAngel Arron Paterson to their board. Arron had pre-clearance from employer Dell EMC. Unfortunately, Dell EMC has since decided that this board appointment is not compatible with his role as CTO. A real shame!
However, this is one to watch out for with other employers or existing affiliations, also any brand exposure in public statements.
Concurrent with AANZ council meeting next week (Suse has with foresight picked Valentines Day) there will be a course for new and fledgeling angels, Angel101. Great opportunity to mix with 20+ registered participants from China and the US (Trump induced?).    Please email our Valentine Suse.
You will have another opportunity to attend Angel101 before our next pitch night, 28 February.

Also, Debra Hall is running her Angel Governance course on 2 March. We're currently firming up rooms with KPMG to host this. Secure your seat here.
Zlata K from Interlike was originally going to give a talk on "Porn & Social Media" but with a new sponsor this has pivoted to "Influence Marketing" - read more about this and register here. C'mon, get deeper into social media, that is always part of the startups we're looking at. Thanks for giving FKA a heads up, Zlata.

Another FKA Friday

3 February 2017  aFKAf 2017#01

The race continues... Heliase DD under Chris and Moxion DD under Rudi have already resumed after the Xmas pit stop. Both in a race to make the last investment slot in LP1 and become portfolio company #10. However, there is also slot #01 to kick off LP2. So let's see.
Not quite like the above of course. Rudi is working on the FKA website for 2017. We have all FKAngels organised on one page, with icon links on hover to LinkedIn, email (e.g. Arron.Patterson@fka.nz) and mobile number. Also, a link to a website or video that helps flesh out the person. Finally a snappy caption.
Before we flick it over to the FKA.nz domain, please your feedback:
  1. if you want a better photo used, then email it to Rudi RB@fka.nz,
  2. if you don't want your mobile number accessible or
  3. have other links you want to be used or
  4. have a snappy caption or some endorsement messages then tell him.
Currently, new FKAngel Dhaya is clearly in the lead for 2017 Poster Boy/Girl. With young Will joining at the end of last year there were high hopes on him after Dan Burrill had unofficially held the title for a long time. Josh also fancies himself as a contender and Tim could have chances, but his photos usually get cut off below the chin.
There is cat herding and there is surveying penguins. Seriously, ecentre and Massey are conducting a survey on NZ Investor Behaviour to benchmark against a similar survey from Silicon Valley. Here the link. JUST DO IT
Rudi has done it and is additionally attending a Focus Group next Thursday.
Jai will sit on a small panel of angel investors judging the Business Is Awesome event that will be held in Auckland on 21st of February.
So far they have 191 registrations from students and commerce undergrads of 19 schools. They will listen to talks by successful entrepreneurs and then form teams and present ideas to angel investor judges, all in one day. Jai promises "I'll blow the trumpet for Flying Kiwis!"
Cool shot, if you could retake it without the umbrella⛱.
