Flying Kiwi Angels, like a machine!
  • Tue 17:00 ? Shaz on NZ and World Economy, @ PwC AKL
  • Wed 4-6PM  ADI.Clinic Takapuna, ADI whip Rudi Bublitz
  • Thu 4-6PM  ADI.Clinic Auckland, ADI whip Rudi Bublitz
Germans don't get excited much. But if people like FKAngel Ralf who is also first investor in and chair of StretchSense FP#01 do get excited then most others listen up.
Ralf is the keen champion for Palace who pitched on Tuesday and will go to the FKA DD vote of the 32 LPs this weekend.  ☞ Here their pitch video
Callaghan 20% R&D funding More in the flyer. Lauder at KPMG knows all and is already helping StretchSense. GO Lauder!
LOL Apologies for last week's typo. Lauder Launder.
A frantic period is coming to close. Over the last three months, we have helped our portfolio companies to raise about $10,000,000. Thank you to everyone who did their bit to make this happen, in particular, our sterling investor reps:
2x Charlie James, Ian Clarke, James Howseason, 2x Rudi Bublitz, Tim Warren.

Uproar FKP#09 has raised $500k more or less to take their new monetisation model forward.

Wherewolf FKP#12 has also raised $500k more or less and will now scale up with no regard to the moon calendar.
Counting the syndication money for Moxion FKP#10. $360k FKA, $220k Enterprise Angels, $200k SCIF, $90k Brisbane Angels, 2x $80k AngelHQ + Manawatu Investment Group. Balance from staff and chair's syndicate.
According to this proud LinkedIn post by Brian the CEO of NexTransfer FKP#11, it appears that the funds of $1,000,000 were neither transferred in a suitcase nor electronically but by good ol' cheque.
2 4 1 - Transfercar & Transfervan.
Fuel 50 FKP#05 has secured US$2m from US VCs Rincon and Bonfire and rejected the offer from local Movac due to much less attractive terms. The concurrent US$500k is oversubscribed. Post round the US VCs will hold just about 7%.
Techion FKP#08 has secured a Series A with $3m from Quayside and K1W1. A concurrent rights issue is well under way. Enterprise Angels brought this one and syndicated it with FKA. FKAngels Ian Clark and John Newton are on the board.
Aisleworx FKP#03 has US investors funding the Aisleworx US Media subsidiary with US$1.1m in hard and US$850k in soft commitments at a premoney of US$11.8m. ANZ investors can participate via NZ Holding, $60k since yesterday.
We have two avid cyclists peddling as directors for our portfolio companies NexTransfer and Fuel 50. FKAngel James Hoseason (NexTransfer) is coming from behind chasing Ross Buckley, KPMG (Fuel 50) for the earlier and bigger exit. Zack is running the book and will take your bets.
The founder team from Sharesies, one of the standout Kiwibank Fintech Accelerator graduates, visited Wellington ADI.Clinic in early August. FKAngels Heath and Phil dig them, and Tim and Rudi caught up with them on Tuesday just before pitch night. Heath reckons they are a hot suspect for our September pitch night
Phil Southward, grandson of Len, true to the Readhead spirit retains a love for fast bikes and cars. A keen hang glider, he is the FKAngel with the largest wingspan except for Seaplane Chris. He lives in Munich and calls his wife lovingly SAUERKRAUT. A lucky bastard as an early Xero investor, and keen as mustard attending ADI.Clinic video calls at 5 am from Germany, smart money.
Smart money? Sure! But he seems to have gotten the wrong end of the stick with the Chief Cat Herder's drive for more gender diversity.
Our FKApprentice Zack has been busily working away to simplify the recording of all FKA Nominee holdings. Studies and a trip to Bangkok as a rep for Waikato University got in the way a bit but he is now more than happy to have the Chief Cat Herder off his back. THANKS ZACK!
We're finalising 2017 tax accounts with KPMG and will include the new look FKA Nominees holding report.
We're getting smarter
We have now expanded the use of Timely to soft manage the participation of our angelic mentors. In essence, this is to avoid either too many showing up or none other than the convener. Interesting to see the sluggish adoption from a group of people that pride themselves on being tech investors
ADI.Clinic this week in Auckland only. We had one proposition to AI-disrupt the legal profession. We suggested lawyers come along to this session but none showed. Too busy, Or scared?

Remember party with Kami, today 18:00 at L1, 214 K-Rd, AKL.
  • Tue 18:30 □ Pitch Night #033, KPMG, 18 Viaduct Harbour Ave, AKL
  • Wed 18:00 ☠️ 30 Aussie VCs, Icehouse, AKL, register
  • Thu 4-6PM  ADI.Clinic Auckland, convener Rudi Bublitz
Pitch Night #033 ◇ Tue 23 May, 18:30 @ KPMG, 18 Viaduct Ave, AKL
Rudi reckons Ralf is bringing a very exciting company that is even more outside what we normally see than NexTransfer. But then Ralf has a nose like no other putting his nose into StretchSense before all others.
Masha Semenova from Glaister Ennor offered to have the case escorted by Russian Mafia. However, in the end, the funds were transferred electronically.
Bill Grierson from Melbourne Angels is an untethered repeat offender, in other words, repeat FKA co-investor. Recently, Rudi emailed BA: "If you have any others like smart Bill... [interested in Moxion FPC#12]" Bill (cc'd) piped up: "Not smarter... just slightly more intrepid in investment appetite perhaps, and also ʟᴇss ᴛᴇᴛʜᴇʀᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇᴀʟɪᴛʏ."
A healthy measure of self-decapitating, in other words, self-deprecating humour.
Companies with $300k+ R&D per annum may qualify for 20% Callaghan funding for 3-5 years. More in the flyer. Lauder at KPMG knows all and is already helping StretchSense. GO Launder!
CCH @ FKA to CEO @ NZVIF: "We don't strive for FKA to take the biggest slice of NZFIV co-investment but rather for FKA to stand for the highest returning slice in the NZVIF portfolio."
Mike Hanna, NZTE by day and FKA by night, is joining the cat herding ring showing his talent with 30 VCs from OZ. On Wednesday after the FKA pitch night on Tuesday, Ian Gardiner from cloud partners AWS will run this interesting panel in AKL. Free to attend, free food and drink, feel free to register ☞ here.
2017 Angel Summit focuses on the next 10 years. ☞ more
Our Chief Cat Herder feels another job title coming on, LinkedIn Lead Ninja like Kerry Topp from Datacom. The above illustrates the increasing levels of engagement that FKA achieves. Not bad for a group of 50 angels with only 50% of them showing FKA as a position on LinkedIn and with 675 or 13x followers. Datacom has 5,000 current staff and 34,150 or not quite 7x followers.
Little know fact: The two LLNs caught up last night and it turns out both do their best  LinkedIn posts or BLPs from bed □
The above Wherewolf post is FKA's most popular post yet, heading for 11,000 impressions with 57 likes and 7 comments. Ben Calder's "It's been an absolute pleasure working with you guys from day 1! There is a good reason we came back. With or without your $$ investment it was clear you wanted us to succeed." Unprompted but showing the quiet impact of Charlie James and the rest of FKA.
With the above croc post, nearly 7,000 impressions and 15 likes, FKA has probably given this great NZTE/AWS initiative more exposure than anyone else.
The hustle post was very successful if a little out of character for KPMG. The LoJo newsletter piece may not be right for LinkedIn, so what to do for our other sponsors?
ADI.Clinic this week in Takapuna and Auckland, each had three founders. We also had virgin mentor Paul Norrie attend for the first time and confuse Tim Gelston and Karl von Randow who mistook him for their first mentee.
A snippet from last week's ADI.Clinic
Katheren asked last week: "What do you hope to take away from this session." Founder: "$200k? Maybe that is too big for you?" Says Rudi: "Not necessarily, we just raised two lots of $1,000,000 for two different startups."

They say, Germans suffer a natural compulsion from their DNA that sees them instantly correcting any mistake they spot. Oh and they do spot them. Karl von Randow has not only a name that betrays his noble Teutonic descent he also excels over other Germans, in particular, Rudi, in all matters of grammar, spelling and factuality.
It is not surprising, therefore that he is the first vigilant FKAngel to point out the incorrect date that was given for next week's pitch night. Thank you, KARL!
It should, of course, be Tue 22 August!
Our May pitch night of the 23rd has long since passed.

FKA, always happy to give a helping hand!

  • Thu 18:00  ZeroPoint Ventures Launch, AKL  ☞ register
?Ralf Muller brought us StretchSense. He is lining up another one for our August pitch night, very different. Anyone else?
Moxion #10 closed in July with $927.6k raised. Now SCIF has committed $200k in the second round. $100k left, looks like that will be taken by Brisbane Angels. Special room for FKA disciples, email our investor rep.
Here a double spread on our two poster boys Ben and Wulf at Wherewolf #12. Our investor rep Charlie would have fitted bang in the middle of that photo adding some white wisdom.
Young FKAngel Jackie Young is calling for ♀ angels from all over NZ to help with this survey from Massey University. Spread the word, take the survey and share the link ☞ www.surveymonkey.com/r/femaleinvestors .
Dan Khan and Sam Bonney were the sterling team behind Lightning Lab 2013 and 2014 which produced several notable startups including Wipster. With the subsequent proliferation of accelerators and the politics, they have formed ZeroPoint Ventures to help all those great NZ startups that are not gunning for the often elusive moon-shot. Here their brief video intro .
Let's support them but also join them to drink their +. Pls, register for the Thu 17 August, AKL Launch or the Mon, 21 August WLG Launch.
Kami #02:  Alliv, Hengje and Jordan have reason to celebrate because they won in the under $1,000,000 turnover category of the 2017 AmCham US export competition.
So they are calling all FKAngels for drinks to their new offices.
Level 1, 214 Karangahape Rd, Auckland, 022-122-9928
Fri 18 Aug 2017, 18:00
Another FKAngel joins our team. Let's give a warm welcome to Campbell Scott. Only one self-confessed dark mark came up. Campbell nicked the lunch box from Karl von Randow a long time ago. All forgiven, says Karl!
Campbell was last seen on a launch in Viaduct Harbour exchanging hi-5s with Russian Kate Turska.
In turn, Kate from KPMG  was last seen sleeping rough on Auckland's street near Aotea Square.
Thanks to Chintaka from GD1II, NZVCA and PwC you can hear Shaz on "New Zealand's Economy in a Global Context". He made it through FKA's Veto Gate yonks ago but then a baby and a job got the better of him.
Tue 29 Aug, 17:00, L22 PwC Tower, 188 Quay St, AKL ☞ RSVP by 14 Aug
Looks like Mike and the rest of the PwC crew are hosting
Little known fact, nearly half of FKA is in on Chintaka's fund.

More on the summit here.
You should go and book here!
ADI.Clinic this week in Wanaka, Wellington and Auckland. That makes more than 10 startups and founders that we have spoken to this week. One video call from Dubai thanks to a referral from Hattaf at NZVIF. Thanks also to our awesome conveners: Charlie James for Wanaka, Ian Clarke for Wanaka and Rudi Bublitz for Auckland.
Just in case you've missed it,
the ADI.Clinic logo has evolved a tad.
We're now also exposing the mentors on the new website for www.ADI.Clinic.

Another FKA Friday

4 August 2017   AFKAF・2017#26

Great FKA result at AmCham Export Awards 2017.
  • Mon 4-6PM  ADI.Clinic Wanaka, convener Charlie James
  • Mon 4-6PM  ADI.Clinic Wellington, convener Ian Clarke
  • Tue 17:30  NZSA Angel at my Table SOLD OUT
  • Thu 4-6PM  ADI.Clinic Auckland, convener Rudi Bublitz
Kami #02 won in the under $1,000,000 turnover category. Wherewolf #12 got close and will likely do so in 2018. Aisleworx #03 was a finalist in the next bigger category. Great black tie awards night with the new American ambassador and our NZ Finance Minister and other dignitaries in attendance. Whilst the MC Rachel Smalley was generous with jokes about local politics including the child planning debate, there was a distinct absence of jibes at Trump. Maybe, not entirely surprising given the diplomatic organisers?

Our CCH Rudi enjoyed free flowing champagne at his table with two category winners Kami #02 and KLP aka the Kiwi Landing Pad who each received and opened a magnum bottle. Whilst FKAngels are more active than most, we still enjoy the vicarious success of our founders, and will enjoy with them the final fruits of success that come with exit.

Congrats to Hengjie, Alliv and Jordan
Now with
over 3,500,000 users
Campbell Scott was part of the Wherewolf DD team, is investing, and has spoken with Charlie J, Phil S and Rudi B. All feel there is a good fit.
FKAngels, any reason Campbell should not join our group?
If know of any skeletons in his closet or otherwise that speak against Campbell joining, now is the time to speak up. In strict confidence, please email the FKA directors.
Our CHH Rudi was going to give everyone a bollocking over not getting off their proverbial and booking the AANZ Exit workshop, after all, who doesn't want to exit. Only then he realised that it was HE who had failed to advertise the course.

EXIT workshop 15/16/17 August in AKL/TRG/WLG ☞ BOOK NOW

More on the summit here.
You should go and book here!
ADI.Clinic this week in Whangarei and Auckland.

FKAngels Garth (pictured) and Rudi had only one booking. What made it a veritable graveyard shift was the fact that this startup was all about death, funeral, the departed and the pain of their family.

Strong interest from funeral directors!
We have a new look website for www.ADI.Clinic    CHECK IT OUT!
Also, we had our first ADI.Cinic in Takapuna this Wednesday.
