Fresh off the press this morning. The US angel investing report!

What’s a mistake you tend to see with new teams? Gluttony. Most think they have to go after a big market and solve a big problem, but the magic of doing a startup is to focus on an incredibly narrow problem that has broad applications. As Steve Jobs used to say, it is difficult to throw away features, not to add them. More from Ashmeet Sidana.
The Economist seems to have a strong opinion.

Hot Lime Labs first raised money and then awareness! TV1 News
A big THANK YOU to James from KPMG for hosting our October pitch night. A regular at our Thursday's ADI, he has also put up with us last Wednesday.

However, the even bigger THANK YOU has to go to Hamish, Zee wife and the rest of the Winedab crew. They kept us plied with wine and hit everyone's taste bud 100% of the time with their proprietary questionnaire.

Great to help MVP'ing. They might even come for money one day

Pitch #1. Clinton pitched a foundation platform that will be key as the number of drone and UAV operators keeps growing. His team has great domain experience, connections and they know what to do.

Jonathan is the champion □

Pitch #2. Not about money, just an update from portfolio company #10. Hugh and the gang at Moxion are going blockbusters. Their next shareholder update is due out soon.

Rudi is the investor rep

Pitch #3. OMG, seldom have we seen a pitch delivered like a sermon set for world domination. Josh and Jarome from Kwotimation pulled off a compelling double act. The pitch we had to wait for because they had an earlier date with Rob from Hillferance. Well worth the wait!

Julian is the champion

That was our clickbait post for this week's ADI registration. With such hairy mentor memes, we promptly had Michael calling in with his time and money-saving barbering prop.

Check out the video, deal flow Andy has more info.

What: Kami Kamillion Halloween Costume Party

This looks interesting, startups and AML - seems like a contradiction in terms but then startups are all about squaring the circle. More here.
A nice little and unpretentious piece on imposter syndrome by Jimi Hunt. He is with The Love Dept. and Live More Awesome and was the driving force behind the biggest water slide.
HBR podcast series on Women at Work - some interesting stuff!
Martin is not the artist, his wife Barbara is, and more of an angel too. She has an exhibition in Mangawhai if you're passing that way. More here.
Fred Wilson from Union Square Ventures, NY "Most [...] wins have been in companies where we were the first institutional VC to talk to the company or where we had way more conviction about the opportunity than other investors at the time of our investment." BLOG

Our Deal Flow Master Andy wants to focus on point one, our Chief Cat Herder Rudi on point two with a diverse group that has a differentiated investment appetite.

OMG, let's get physical again! After several virtual Q&A sessions that brought value for founders and angels alike, we return to another fix of good old fashioned pitch night.

As usual at KPMG, 18 Viaduct Harbour Ave, AKL with James McGeorge!

Winedab is a fine blend of Tinder and Speed Dating, just for wine.  Hamish and Zee will bring perfectly matched wine to Wednesday's pitch night. For the Tinder experience, fill out this online questionnaire or have a speed dating chat with Zee on the night.
NZGCP's Elevate programme has awarded $21m to Blackbird, then $10m to Movac's first close and now $20m to Pacific Channel. NZ Herald

Congrats to all three!

NZTE put on ceosummit.betterbydesign.org.nz, it happened in March. Lots of great videos from 2020 and 2019. Worth a look for a Netflix break.

On the topic of NZTE, Simon Ansley's investment team is well diversified and now seems to double as the goto place for talent among Kiwi VC funds. Cassey has joined Movac, Nadine has joined Punakeike Fund. But then Simon has already hired Laura.

Graeme corrects last week's insert. Dean has put on new gumboots for Finistere. The Factory CEO is now Dave Craig with Stephen McPhail as Investment Manager and Nick Gain as MIG Manager.

Dean Tilyard and his crew at The Factory let 7 of 20 startups through the drafting gate for this year's Innovate where cow dung meets the topsoil.

Turns out a lot of our mentors have 4 letter names: Andy, Emma, Glen, Matt, Pooj, Ralf, Rudi & Todd to name more than 4. The Post...

One way to spot a good analyst is that they use softened, hedging language. For example, not “we conclude” but “we are inspired to wonder.”  Read the full HBR article.

Erick, Glen, Rudi and angel applicant Emma were cooking up a storm as mentors last weekend. The organising team was amazing and mostly from GridAKL. That's the reason why GridAKL is FKA HQ!

Startup Weekend Auckland is just one of the many capacity building events that Campbell and Imche want to make sure FKA Angels support.

Not Emma Peel but Emma Blott is pushing through FKA's Veto Gate this week. Erick, Glen and Rudi have seen her fighting fit, mentoring at Startup Weekend. Maheen has known her for a while. Emma in turn likes how we do things at FKA. So a new Angel to the team!

However, if anyone knows of any reason why Emma should be pushed back, now is the time to speak up and notify the Board in confidence.

Startup Weekend was great, now, pencil Imagine—Tai Tokerau up in Whangarei next month. Find out more from Martin.Knoche@fka.nz who is one of the organisers. Check out the event site.

Campbell & Imche are scheming a bus trip, Andy has trialled a VW California last week already. Martin has some great waterfront cabins and Lawrence a boat... Whangarei could be a lot of fun!

Great online workshop! 16 and 23 November, 09:00 - 11:30. $57.50 or $115 for 3+ from one organisation. Email CCH@fka.nz to combine and conquer that discount! Ask Debra for more info. Maheen recommends it!

Some particular relevance for startup solvency after these recent articles in $NBR and NZ Herald.

Kiwi Alex McNaughten is pitching Justin Michael, US-based best-selling author, sales leader and expert sales technologist. Both give a FREE Zoominar about how tech can lift sales results. BOOK 29 Oct, 10am!
The FKA M-Team is shaping up just fine! Second team call next week. If you want to contribute and shape where we go give our CCH a call
Matthew has been a young regular at ADI.Clinic. Now, he has stepped up to take responsibility for the investor docs at FKA Nominees.

Phew! One less cat-herding task, says Rudi. Thanks, Matthew!

Say hello, iDoc.Sheriff@fka.nz

Dean Tilyard and his crew at The Factory let 7 of 20 startups through the drafting gate for this year's Innovate where cow dung meets the topsoil.
Busy day again at ADI Auckland. Ex-NZVIFler shared a deal with us. A nice surprise from FileInvite James who attended as a mentor, 3 years to the day after his own visit to ADI. Stuff that makes the Dirty Dozen proud!

Today 2 deals found instant champions. Deal Flow Master Andy is mapping a Trello board with the help from Potentia's Julian—some recruiters do more than talk and network

KiwiNet is running a WILD programme with a tame logo. We GIFted a little alligator allure. All about advancing the leadership and governance skills of women with a STEM background. Find out more!

Read about a WILD angel here.

Remember this pitch back in 2017? Mel wanted to take her Magical Park into Chinese shopping malls. We were sceptical. She has done many things since. Magical Park has now landed in the US. Go, Mel!
Time to die cinemas struggle! A brief Espresso Economist read.

If you've missed Paul Adams at our last physical pitch night then this virtual session with Tyler Capson would be a great opportunity to catch up on DD of Intangible Assets. Clamber on here!

It was a busy Thursday ADI in Auckland this week. We had one drop out only to have another one sneak in after 18:00. One slot was about the interesting everybodyeats.nz initiative.
A voice from the past. "Hopefully you remember me and my Pole Testing business. 2014 ADI, 2015 US$650k, 2018 cash flow positive, 2020 declined US$10m offer. I'd love to get some feedback... coffee?"
After ADI Glen took these photos and provided the caption.
