31 May 2019 #18

All of you, here comes the video to show what you've missed out on if you didn't join the flight of 50 on Monday 20 May 2019.

We're running ADI.Clinic at eight sites across the country with the help of other angels groups that are stepping up in the regions. Whangarei is one of those sites and Akudos comes from there after the team has been coached by Lawrence over several months.

This is their pitch video, FKA's 34 Voting Angels are currently deliberating whether to proceed to DD. Nearly half the votes are in so far and there is clearly interest in Akudos.

Nothing smelly has come up on these two, they have cleared the VETO GATE without incident. So, let's welcome [email protected] and [email protected] as new members to FKA, taking our count to 58.

"It will be administered by the Super fund, with NZVIF making the investments through private sector fund managers."

"The Venture Capital Association had expressed concerns that if NZVIF went it alone with investments, bypassing private fund managers, that would run counter to its original remit of helping grow a strong private sector venture capital industry in New Zealand and could "crowd out" private investment." ☞ full article

Also, ☞ this article.  "[...] Icehouse chief executive Andy Hamilton also said the challenge would be getting the private sector on board to match the investment." Meaning increase the $3m($100m) fund presumably?

FileInvite №14 is raising to accelerate growth. Watch out for the co-investment call that is coming your way later today. Cornelius and Phil are sharing their findings in a DD Brief for this round. Both of them and Garth, who is Chair and investor rep, are doubling down.

Ping [email protected] for more info.

The Vesper Marine Sẙ02 round is coming to a close. If you want to invest in smart Kiwi tech that prevents oil spills and other maritime disasters, then ping [email protected] for more info.
Rudi and Gavin were the two FKAngels at table 54 of the HI-Tech Awards, the last and crowning event of Techweek. Even Jacinda attended. Each year they also add one to the Flying Kiwi Hall of Fame.

The above shot shows impeccable timing from Lance Wiggs. Still, he is clearly better at investing than photography.

David Wang, on the other hand, shows more talent with photo composition and lighting. His LinkedIn post includes the propaganda suit "No Future for Fees on Founders".

With Techweek and Budget over, it's time for some Friday Fun Facts!

Despite Techweek, we had our normal April Pitch Nigh on Tuesday and the LoJo reception area was promptly turned into a hip space with great Angel ambience.

Martin gave a little teaser on a Mobility event he is putting together for the hot summer days in Whangarei. Lawrence introduced the team from Akudos who pitched well. They will submit their video for our DD Vote in the next few days, for now, we have this teaser.

Lawrence also gave a demonstration of how US Angels help their startup puppies. He distributed schwag sunglasses from his other startup Horn.co. Rudi came a mere second handing out Moxion.io bags.

OMG, what a busy week! Events all over the country, every waking hour. 50 Angels Flying picked a lucky slot early on Monday morning and cut a favourable deal with the weather gods. Campbell was inundated with dating requests that same night at GridAKL's Speed Dating with Advisors.

Impossible to list all the events that Flying Kiwis have attended or facilitated this week, suffice it to say "It's been awesome but tiring!".

Joe Harper is a smart Angel from Palmi and he is with MIG Angels. However, that doesn't stop him from also wanting to join FKA. It is great to see the connections between Angel groups strengthening in this way.

He has worked and talked with Debra, Garth and Rudi. They each say, "A perfect candidate!". However, if you know of any contraindications, please, advise the Board in confidence.

Over the last two years, Hattaf Ansari has helped FKA as much as it was appropriate given his role at NZVIF. This has been beneficial to both organisations. Now that he has left NZVIF, he wants to formally join the ranks of FKA. David F, Phil and Rudi fully support that.

As always though, if you know of any dead camels in his closet or elsewhere, please, advise the Board in confidence.

Tim says, "Last one!". Today, Friday 24 May, 14:30, an interesting podcast that he says will feature Ambit and Moxion. Two great companies that have support from numerous Flying Kiwis!
Rudi says, "Very last one!". Today, Friday 24 May, 18:00, the Hi-Tech Awards and he will don his latest propaganda jacket.
Before you stack up for your next party check out DrinkSpy. For once a name that tells it all, a price comparison site for drinks. FKAngel Eric and maverick mentor Andy Harwood can tell you more.
An interesting article just in from AngelList. One of a kind entrepreneur and angel investor Peter Knowles from Devonport was in this niche well ahead of the curve with OneRoom.

Next Tuesday 21 May, 18:30 will be our Pitch Night. This month hosted by LoJo, high up on level 15 of the PwC Tower, 188 Quay St, Auckland.

Lawrence is bringing a company from Whangarei that is all about "Making People Feel Valued". Lawrence is not a year in the country and has already appeared on TVNZ. Let's hope he has more luck picking his startups than with picking his cars. Back in the US, he is still working on a 'unicorn' aptly named Horn.co.

Speed Dating? Campbell is our man! He will field all questions on startup funding next Monday from 17:00 at GridAKL/Lysaght Building. Great stuff!
Evidently, the best Kiwi deep tech entrepreneurs have curly hair. They are telling their story that started at LevelTwo. One of the top events in this year's Techweek lineup. Register ☞ HERE.

From deep tech to hair tech, Sean and Peter would make great test candidates. Hairsense.co is a fine example of the sort of ideas and startups we get to meet at ADI.Clinic. This tech is a far cry from the early beginnings of Suck Cut in Wayne's World.

Get the picture? If not, read Rudi's commentary.

Let's hope that the MBIE RFP that is imminent will produce a batch of more founder and co-investor friendly Tech Incubators. There are certainly some promising candidates that intend to apply in this round.

50 Angels Flying on Monday, 20 May at 10:00. ☞ Register

Last chance to register. We have secured fashionista Paul Blomfield to judge who is stepping "Best Dressed" off a Lime scooter, UBCO farm bike, Kwikli moped or from a Yoogo car. Our friends and co-investors at Potentia have pledged a champagne magnum for the winner.

Our CCH is promiscuous on LinkedIn with 10,000+ connections but this connection request stands out. Little relevance to angel investing though.

Āhau did not get sufficient support to proceed to DD with FKA. However, they are already progressing with an impact investor. Heath will stay in touch with them.
Zeddy DD has come to a halt with insufficient traction of third-party sales to provide sufficient validation of the business model at this stage.
Kiwibank is bankrolling the partner's opening night next Tuesday night. What's not to like about that? Register, show up & enjoy! A week later is pitch night, let's do the same again.
In the UK, Lowndes stands for double monk shoes. In New Zealand, Lowndes Jordan stands for double good lawyers that dig startups as much as FKA does. The team at LOJO will be hosting our May pitch night so note the date, Tue 21 May, 18:30. The day after 50 Angels Flying.

50 Angels Flying on Monday, 20 May at 10:00. ☞ Register

A wide mix of Angels from groups around the country have already registered including some Aussie VC types. It's going to be a blast!

LevelTwo houses and nurtures a lot of New Zealand's finest deep tech startups. They are opening their lab doors in the evening of our 50 Angels Flying event on Monday, 20 May. 10 or so years ago Rocketlab was running first experiments in the very same place.

Find out more and register HERE.

Rudi has combined four videos into a single NZVIF lament. So far, the video has clocked over 1,200 views on LinkedIn. Who knows, he might have to put it on the Moxion №10 platform for speedy delivery if the NBR wants to license it.
Ever wondered what creative use an email looks like? Richard is pictured above with Sue Avery at the launch of AIM, FKA's angelic brothers and sisters in Marlborough. Richard is the Chair of AIM and his new email gotta be a winner, a real challenge to longtime champion Trevor Dickinson aka RTD2@xtra.co.nz!

We have 29 votes in for Āhau but no clear decision yet.

Charlie voted and explains. A vote from Rio Bamba, central highlands of Ecuador. Hard to do because Google insists on translating everything into Latin American Spanish, but think it worked.

Moxion №10, investor rep Rudi ◇ We had $300k bidding for $100k of shares that a shareholder was offering for health reasons.

First dibs going to shareholders according to the company constitution so no chance for new investors unless via one of the nominees of AIM, AngelHQ, Brisbane Angels, Enterprise Angels or FKA. Moxion is a well-syndicated deal with evidently strong support from shareholders!

The Techweek19 opening event is on 20 May 2019 at 07:00. ☞ Register

Swiftly followed by 50 Angels Flying at 10:00. ☞ Register

It will all electric and electrifying: Lime will bring scooters, Kwikli e-mopeds, UPCO e-farm bikes, and Yoogo e-cars. We have a good number and a great mix of investors already registered.

Greg from Matū warns of a spoof trademark register scam. He has seen this at one of his companies. Perfectly timed for their renewal.

☞ SEE DETAILS

Whilst the investment world is crazily hunting elusive unicorns or rather elusive returns from unicorns, Rudi was presented with the GridAKL Unicorn Award for the month of April. Some say for good behaviour. Anyways, there are still some chocolates left in the box...

This Tuesday Jackie and Rudi attended an ATEED workshop. Manawa Udy was paired with Rudi for a warmup exercise sketching him from memory with her eyes closed. Lots of brainstorming followed.

"FKA Ice Angels" received the most support stickers. Neither Jackie nor Rudi seeded this idea but both can see the merits for Auckland.

Some activity on LinkedIn this week. The images hyperlink to the posts. Our entry on ScaleUp.NZ has already generated the first leads, they checked into ADI Auckland on Thursday. Remember our fun day out in 2016? You need gumboots for AgTech DD - advice from Bily Connolly. Interesting job spec to consider for our CEOs.
